Maxi Dress Preview

After seeing this dress on Lida's blog I knew I absolutly had to make myself a fun printed maxi dress.  I've had this fabric for a couple years...it's a lightweight jersey knit...and I'm completely in love with the print...when I bought it I didn't really have a plan for it, and I kept coming up with different ideas, but never actually went on to make anything with it untill now!
I made the dress by draping the fabric on my dressform and pinning a pattern into the fabric.  The 2 pictures below are actually a picture of the pattern that evolved from my draping...so it's pretty much a folded rectangle with a tiny bit of shaping at the top.
To sew this dress all I had to do was sew a center back seam (using a small zig-zag for stretch)  Fold and tack down at the top of the center back seam (the part of the fabric that makes a slight triangle).  Then I cut out some long strips from the leftover fabric and braided them to make the straps.  On my dressform I pinned the braid where I wanted it then hand sewed it into place.
Check out my little seamstress in the making.....
The back of the dress ended up a little bit different than ths picture shows....I just eliminated the braid that goes across the back, so it left it more open.  Now I just have to figure out what to do for a bra with this dress...any ideas??

Wow, I'm completely impressed! Maybe I should've taken the production course, though I doubt any dress of mine would look like that! Awesome job, I can't wait to see it on!

Finally getting a chance to read some posts. What an amazing dress you are making. Love the bakc. There are strapless bras with no back. They stick on to your skin on the sides. I am pretty sure Victoria's secret sells them.
