Todays "Fashionable Mama" is Maya, who is always fashionable and has many amazing DIY projects on her blog!
# of Kids and Ages:
I have two: boy 6 1/2 and girl 5 (they are 19 mos apart)
A brief description of your blog:
Basically, it's about a 39-year old soccer mom shedding her "sweats and tee" image and trying to look stylish on a budget. I also love to show off my Do It Yourself projects on my blog. I've been very fortunate to meet many lovely like-minded bloggers from around the world in the process.
Did you start "fashion blogging" before or after you had kids?:
Long after I had kids... My blog is only 4-5 months long.
Do you feel that your style changed after you had kids? If yes, how? If no, why not?:
Yes. After my first child was born, I quit my accounting job. All I wanted to wear for several years after that was "gym-wear" (old tees and sweats). I still do of course, but now I try to dress up every now and then. And by dress up I only mean something slightly better looking than just sweats or yoga pants. I just feel better when I look better. Sure we all try not to judge, but we can't help it. We are judged by what we wear and how we look. And you can look stylish at any price-point. My favorite places to shop are TJ Maxx, Ross, Stein Mart, Kohl's, Target, Goodwill.
What do you think is the biggest misconception of being a mother?:
Before I had children I did not realize how much time and energy it took to be a good mother.
What do you think is the biggest misconception of being a "fashion blogger"?:
I will let you on my secret. I had told only 2 or 3 of my friends about my blog. So I honestly, don't know what others think about fashion blogging. I stumbled upon it myself through an article in the Wall Street Journal.
What is something you enjoy doing that is completely unrelated to your children and fashion blogging?:
I love art. William Turner, Vermeer, Jean Millet, Pirosmani are my favorite artists just to name a few.
How would you describe your personal style?:
Not too polished, not too serious. Diana Vreeland said: "too much good taste can be boring." People around me dress as if they want to blend in, as if they are afraid to make a mistake of standing out, or even perhaps afraid of being ridiculed. That's what I used to do - wanted just to blend in. Every person is unique and it's fun to express ourselves through what we wear, how we look.
What are some of your favourite current fashion trends?:
I am glad you asked that questions because trends fascinate me. Why something becomes popular all of the sudden? And why some trends are like love at first sight and others have to grow on me (but I still end up loving those just the same)? If trends scare you like they used to scare me, think of them as of new ways to look at something.
Generally speaking, my favorite trend nowadays is mixing dressy with casual and tough or bulky with delicate. I just saw D&G collection with Nordic knit snowflake sweaters and chiffon floral maxi skirts. I thought it'd be fun to try that look.
And your least favourite?:
Can't get into destroyed jeans look myself though I like it on others who can pull it off.
What do you think is the key element to balancing “style” with function for mothers?:
As mothers, we all tend to sacrifice ourselves to our children, our families etc. And of course we should... but there is a point when you realize you have to take care of yourself to be a better mom, wife and even better person. Fashion helps me to feel better about myself. If only Mr. Wonderful (that's what my husband calls himself) could understand that when I go shopping I am doing him a favor!
Any other random thoughts or interesting things about you that you would like to share?:
Don't be afraid to try new things. Sometimes we just have to take risks in life. Have fun with fashion. Try to stay modest and respectful to others while you are having fun.
Thank you Maya for all the lovely answers!
