Last week I skipped posting a Fashionable Mama because I felt there was too much happening on my blog with the 30 for 30 challenge, but now that it's completed it is time to introduce you to Elizabeth from Law Mama! No frumpy suits for this Lawyer!
# of Kids and Ages:
Just Zeke so far. He just turned one!
A brief description of your blog:
It's something between a mommy blog and a personal style blog. The result is that I now get dressed every day and don't spend the day in my "lounge wear," as they say.
Did you start "fashion blogging" before or after you had kids?:
After. I had a personal blog in college, but I didn't have time to maintain it much once I started law school.
Do you feel that your style changed after you had kids? If yes, how? If no, why not?:
When Zeke was first born all I thought about was comfort and breastfeeding ease. Recently I decided to start blogging, and documenting my outfits became a way of getting me out of pajamas/lounge wear and into cuter outfits. The biggest change to my pre-baby style now is that I try to wear outfits that easily accommodate breastfeeding.
What do you think is the biggest misconception of being a mother?:
That we give up on ourselves and our appearance when we have kids
What do you think is the biggest misconception of being a "fashion blogger"?:
That I'm inherently stylish. I've always cared about clothes - but more in the sense of being appropriately attired for the situation I'm in. I want to be on trend and chic, and I pay attention to the latest fashions, but only lately have I been trying to push the envelope. I'm trying to push myself to be more creative in what I wear and be more fashionable. I tend to fall into the "comfortable" rut, and my blog is a way to get me out of that rut.
What is something you enjoy doing that is completely unrelated to your children and fashion blogging?:
Hmm, I haven't done either as much as I did before kids, but I love indoor rock climbing and knitting. Also I'm a big ol' history nerd (I have a Bachelor's degree in History) and lately I've been obsessing about Henry VIII and all his wives. I used to dabble in historical reenacting when I was younger, but I had to take time off when I went to law school.
How would you describe your personal style?:
Classic, comfortable and easy. I don't do well with fussy clothes - I like things to look clean and modern.
What are some of your favourite current fashion trends?:
Leggings and belts! What a great way to be comfortable and to add a little simple bit of interest to an outfit.
And your least favourite?:
Crazy high heels. I keep trying to be a fan, but my feet always hurt when I wear anything taller than 2 inches.
What do you think is the key element to balancing “style” with function for mothers?:
Easy care fabrics and stylish flats are your best friends! I think you have to stay comfortable when dressing well or you won't keep up with it. If getting dressed is uncomfortable, you'll just stay in pajamas all day.
Any other random thoughts or interesting things about you that you would like to share?:
I met Queen Elizabeth when I was 18 months old (at a reenactment event with my parents at Sutter's Fort). She approved of my name!
Thank you Elizabeth for all your answers!
