Canadian Cutie: Rosel

It's Canadian Cutie time again!  Who woulda guessed that a Fashion Bloggers favourite Canadian store would be Canadian Tire (a store full of everything but clothes)?

Your name:

Rosel (pronounced Rose-ELLE)

Montreal, QC

Blog name:

A brief description of your blog:

A feminist/anti-racist take on culture and style.

How long have you been blogging, and what made you start?

I wrote my first post in March 2009, but it wasn't until the summer of 2010 that I started blogging regularly. As for the general blog, I started blogging as a way of keeping myself occupied after I finished my Master's degree, and was in that limbo looking for work. But my outfit posts only started this year, when I wanted to explore and reconcile my love of clothes and with my feminist and anti-racist beliefs.

How would you describe your personal style?

I'm a minimalist - I like simple clothes with a pop of colour
Do you feel that you can relate better to fashion bloggers living in Canada?  Or is there no difference?

I don't think there's a big difference in relating to fashion bloggers - for me, one of the great things about fashion blogs is how we can relate to each other, no matter how far apart we are. But I have to say, I do love being able to recognize Canadian landmarks or cities in another blogger's photo. So what do you know - maybe I DO relate better to fashion bloggers in Canada!

What are some of your favourite Canadian (only found in Canada) stores?

Does Canadian Tire count?! That store seriously has almost everything. During my last trip there I came home with some window plastic, a French press coffee maker, an iron, and some garbage bags. Where else can I find all of those things in one place?

What store do you wish would open up in Canada?

Lots of American fashion bloggers seem to get fabulous clothes from Target. I guess now that Target bought Zellers, I don't have to wish for it anymore, do I?

Do you have any favourite Canadian designers/fashion brands?

I'm pretty limited in funds when it comes to buying fashion "brands" - plus, I'm trying to spend and consume less this year. But I do love the occasional trip to buy some Joe Fresh clothes at the Canadian Superstore. Simons, a Quebec-based department store, is also a great alternative to stores like H&M.

Who would you consider a true Canadian Fashion Icon?

I can't say I know too much about fashion icons, but Coco Rocha is a great model and a role model too. She's been pretty active in speaking out against the impossible standards of weight and beauty of the fashion industry, which I think is so great. (

Finish these sentences:

A person with true style is someone who...

can wear one item in multiple, creative ways.

My greatest fashion inspirations come from...

other style blogs.

The most clich√© Canadian thing I enjoy/have ever done is...
hosting a "Canada"-themed party when it was my 10-year anniversary in Canada (I moved to Vancouver from Korea just before my 13th birthday) with lots of poutine.

Aside from fashion blogging what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I write about gender and race issues for other places, including Schema Magazine
and Kickaction I write book reviews for the Montreal Review of Books. I'm a huge TV junkie (having majored in Cultural Studies) and have recently discovered Modern Family - what a refreshing take on the tired ol' family sitcom!

Do you have any other random thoughts or interesting things you would like to share about yourself?

I have to acknowledge and thank my wonderful and talented boyfriend Pat, who has put up with my requests for outfit photos even in the brutal Montreal winter weather. He's also pretty great with a camera.

Thank you Rosel for taking the time to answer these questions!
