Hello, Required 2 Be Inspired readers! I'm Lisa from The Coastal Chicster here guest posting while Natasha's away. I live in Virginia Beach, and my blog is all about my life and style on the mid-Atlantic coast. This summer, I've made it a sort of unwritten goal for myself to master the art of warm-weather layering, and I've noticed a vast improvement in my ability to put together outfits with more depth and detail than I was doing last year when I first started posting outfit photos.
Today, I'd like to share with you some of my go-to layering pieces and tricks for this season. Most of these pieces are pretty trendy, so I got them on the cheap to mix and match with higher end items in my wardrobe.
Safari and Lace
These are two trends I was extremely hesitant to try, but I've managed to find a suitable balance pairing a rugged safari vest with delicate lace at reasonable prices. I've also created this combination by pairing a cargo vest with a white eyelet dress, as well as a white eyelet corset top with loose-fitting cargo capri pants.
White and Brights
This is a pretty standard combination for me -- I simply love a fresh, white jacket or cardigan layered over a bright dress in the summer. I usually have to replace my favorite jackets every few years (because I tend to wear them out over time), and this year I managed to find two that I love very much. I tend to wear the cropped one over maxi dresses and full skirted dresses. I often pair the Bermuda jacket with shorts, jeans, and slimmer cut, shorter dresses and skirts.
Floral, Chambray and Khaki
I think these two outfits are my most successful attempts at summer layering thus far. However, as I said, I live in Virginia Beach. It's not very often a day cool enough to pull this off comes along. But when they do, I know what I'm wearing -- a pretty floral button-down under a fitted utility jacket, or better yet, this sleeveless trench. I'll admit, it took me about three hours of trying on outfits in my room to figure out how to wear this thing, but I think I've got it down to a science now. =)
Cropped Crochet and Old Dresses
Of all my summer layering pieces, this is definitely the most versatile. It's enabled me to update the look of so many old dresses I've had hanging in the back of my closet, and I've had so much fun wearing some of them. The Hawaiian dress above was a gift from my mom circa 2001, and the top is just kind of outdated. This cropped top hides the part of the dress I don't like anymore and shows off the pretty, flaired, mid-length skirt that I love. The pink dress came from a clothing swap, and even though it's strapless, this crochet top enables me to wear it to work without feeling overexposed.
So, there you have it. Those are my summer layering pieces that I'll be remixing with my wardrobe for the next few months. And if I could choose just one more to add to the mix, it would definitely be this vest from LOFT. (But, I think I've got enough.)
I hope you enjoyed my post, and I hope you'll stop by The Coastal Chicster sometime and say hi! Have a great summer!
